David Farnsworth ARTIST STATEMENT email@example.com
A visual artist living in Palm Springs California since 1999, my focus in watercolor, pen and ink and illustration has expanded to include ceramic sculpture. I have no formal training as a visual artist, but found it a sanctuary after pursuit of a career as an actor in the 1980's. I was blessed by the friendship and mentor Will Docherty (1950-1992) whose work in pen and ink inspired much of my early works on paper. The love and support of Don Corliss was the initial catalyst to my pursuant Art endeavors.
My painting career began in the Pacific Northwest with gallery exhibits of watercolor paintings in Seattle WA., Portland OR., San Francisco, CA., and, Boise, ID. from 1983-1999.
I paint and sculpt from memory and imagination. It is a map of revelations for me on a personal level.
With distance, I often see the larger story. Somehow it belongs to me and yet it is its own.
There is a 'Divine Spark' in the making of a hundred works of art when one that informs about life and spirit is revealed.
That process is treasure to be shared.
I have been working at Silica Ceramic Studio since summer of 2007, hand building pots, dogs, vessels and elemental busts. I love how dimensional work informs my painting and vice-versa. I am blessed to be working in studio with artists who inspire, mentor and share their great wealth of experience and artistic genius.
I have the joy of friendship and collaboration with Diane Graves of DIDA. Since 1987 I have designed illustrations for her line of copper ornaments and lamps as well as her paper lamps and shades. You can view her beautiful inspired works at www.dianegraves.com .
I share my life with artist Zane Rhys. His work can be seen at www.zanerhysart.com. We have collaborated on many different projects, combining his masterful drawings interpreted in clay and sculptural motif. You can find both of our work available in his online store The Dancing Faun Emporium
My work has been jury selected for Ace Exhibitions at Palm Springs Art Museum in 2010 through 2014, and the Palm Springs City Art commission shows 2005 through 2012, receiving various awards in watercolor painting as well as sculpture.
I have had the pleasure of coordinating exhibitions of local artists' work for the Streetbar Artwall Project. Beginning in 2003, I have had the opportunity to curate monthly shows, with the artists donating 20% of sales to the AIDS Assistance program, Palm Springs Animal Shelter and The Center for the LGBT Community of Palm Springs and other charities of the artists choice as well.
